World Autism Day - Light It Up Blue

Written by Donna Lehman

Today is World Autism Awareness Day. Take some time to show your love and appreciation for the people in your life affected by autism.

I'm celebrating the achievements of my own wonderful son, Gabriel. Aged 18 and set to graduate from high school next month, he has achieved so much more than anyone predicted when he was diagnosed 15 years ago. And I know he will continue to learn, grow and reach new goals.

There are dozens of wonderful places to read more about autism and what you can do to show support.

Are You For or Against? It's All About the Message

Written by Donna Lehman

Washington ProtestersYou probably wonder where the rest of the question is: "For or against - what??" I would argue that it might not matter. That it might depend on the way the question was worded, or the argument was presented, or what day of the week it is, or whether or not you had a good night's sleep.

Relationships Matter - More than Ever

People Connections

This first year of the new decade has started out with a bang. And a rumble. And loud murmurings around the globe. Plenty of press-worthy content going around, much of it tragic, gloomy or kvetching. There's so much going on that it's hard to cut through the noise.

But for businesses the news has been a mixed bag so far. Some positive economic signs, some still frightening.

Westboro Baptist Church known for military funeral protests to picket in Flint | Flint News - - MLive.com.

When your message is distorted by the receiver...there's not much you can do. Filmmaker Mike Ramsdell covered members of the inflammatory, anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church in his powerful documentary, The Anatomy of Hate: A Dialogue to Hope. The film screening at the Kettering International Film Festival in Flint, Michigan has sparked a protest by members of the church. One member wrote a long, rambling, hate-filled op-ed email to the local paper.

Port-au-Prince following earthquake

Horrible news out of Haiti about the devastation caused by a 7.0 earthquake near Port-au-Prince. Twitter reports were some of the most immediate yesterday evening, when other communication channels were shut down and transportation into the area was limited.

The One organization got me interested and signed up for Blog Action Day 2009, so in keeping with my promise to blog about the importance of activism to stop climate change - here are some of the best sources for information to get you motivated:

Want to Pitch a Story? 5 PR Sources to Help

Written by Donna Lehman
Noises Prohibited

It's a noisy world these days, but I still believe a well planned PR strategy is one of the most cost effective ways to build brand, buzz and bonding with new contacts - particularly if you are a small enterprise. Public relations is not some magical, arcane art. It is dedication, work, and should be based on honesty. It involves establishing trust - between the publicist and the reporter, or between the press release content and the reader. For something to be 'newsworthy', it needs to be a real story and provide factual information which matters. PR is a responsibility.

I'm really upset about some recent events that cross the boundaries of 'open public discourse'. In fact, I'm not just 'upset' (the polite kind of statement my parents and grandparents taught me to say), I'm APPALLED and PISSED OFF - maybe even SPITTIN' MAD - that some folks don't know the difference between communicating freely and inciting people to violence.

The trigger for my outrage: The OBAMA ASSASSINATION POLL on Facebook!!! Come on, REALLY??? I could not believe this when I first heard it. Well, of course, I could believe it, but I didn't want to think anyone could be that (insert any number of adjectives here....) stupid, asinine, hateful, disrespectful, loony, DANGEROUS...OK, I'll pause there.
Yes, I know we uphold free speech - and I'm a staunch defender of that right. However, there are human factors known as 'judgment' and 'decency' that should work as filters in our brains; that should give us pause before expressing ourselves. Yeah, maybe I'm expecting a lot, because I haven't seen or heard much restraint being used in any form of communication medium these days. It's not really 'shock and awe', it's more like 'shock and awwwww...oh no, you DIDN'T say that!' Cringe.
