Phil Andrews
Senior Consultant

Phil is a communication strategist with
over ten years' experience in the marketing world. He has served a wide
range of clients from a variety of chairs -- as an agency consultant and
as a freelancer. Managing campaigns to completion in nearly every medium,
he has devised marketing strategies, crafted communication tools, and
worked with everyone from the shop machinists to the CEO. He's lived through
the frenzied launch of startups, as well as strained to turn the giant
wheels of Corporate America. (Given the choice, he'll take the former.)
From "old media" to the Web Economy and back again, Phil has emphasized
one basic rule in his work: marketing begins by understanding the brand,
and succeeds by articulating it. Everything else lies somewhere in between.
By training and inclination, Phil is a lifelong writer. This perspective
informs his approach to any project - and may also explain some of his
eccentricities. Wearing the writer's hat helps ensure that the message
is consistent, and the delivery is in tune. And it helps him keep the
faith that at its best, the marketing business isn't about selling widgets:
It's about creating and expressing powerful ideas.
Prior to joining forces with Donna and MarketUp, Phil worked both as an
independent professional and in the agency world. Agency positions included:
Addwater, San Francisco
Provided account leadership for this mid-size, brand-oriented marketing
shop. Marketing projects included interface, direct mail, and collateral
programs for a mix of marquee clients and startups. Phil also served as
a strategic marketing consultant to Addwater's clients on more long-term
issues—and made as many hands-on creative contributions as he could
find time for.

Managed all aspects of client relationships for this Web design, marketing,
and branding agency at the very height of the Web bubble. Led hurry-up
discovery efforts, developed ever-evolving strategies to meet changing
client needs, and kept production teams focused and humming.
Xceed, Inc., Sausalito
Rose through the ranks, from copywriting to consulting, in a creative
agency that combined consumer advertising techniques with corporate communication
expertise. On the creative side, he served as communication strategist,
creative director, writer, and editor, while handling account and project
management duties as well.
