PDRI to Begin Work on Designing New Approach to Federal Government Performance Appraisal

PDRI, a PreVisor company, won a competitive bid to design a new performance appraisal system for the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), expected to be implemented for the 2012 appraisal cycle.
PDRI’s selection followed the recommendations of a comprehensive 18-month study of GAO’s performance appraisal system (PAS).
“GAO is undertaking an innovative approach to improve performance management. An approach that will focus on ensuring users of the system – both managers and employees – engage in effective performance management behavior,” stated Dr. Elaine Pulakos, COO of PDRI.
Dr. Pulakos, a past president of the Society for Industrial & Organizational Psychology (SIOP), is perhaps best recognized for her work in performance measurement, where an approach developed by her and her staff is now used to evaluate hundreds of thousands of federal employees. She was awarded the Distinguished Professional Contributions Award in 2009 for her work.
PDRI recommends an approach designed to educate staff that while performance management can be the most effective tool available for getting work done, no ‘system’ alone can yield effective results due to the necessity for effective people interaction. The primary focus of the work will be improving manger-employee communication and aspects of their relationship that are foundational for effective performance management.
